Greenpeace
We redesigned and built the front end for Greenpeace UK’s website, adapting an international design concept for a UK audience and implementing it in Drupal.
In 2011, Greenpeace UK undertook a major redesign of their website as part of a wider effort to modernise their digital presence and better support campaigning, storytelling and donations. An international design direction, produced by a Dutch agency, served as the starting point for the work.
Our role was to reinterpret and adapt this international design for the UK site, ensuring it met local content needs while remaining true to the global Greenpeace brand. We were responsible for the page design, interaction patterns, and the full front-end implementation, working within Drupal’s theming system.
Design Adaptation
The design work focused on translating a high-level international concept into a practical, flexible system for the UK site. This included:
- Redesigning page layouts to suit UK-specific content and campaigns
- Refining typography, hierarchy and imagery to improve readability and impact
- Adapting components to support frequent content updates and rapid campaign launches
- Ensuring strong visual storytelling while maintaining usability
Front-end & Drupal Implementation
The front-end implementation was delivered using Drupal, with an emphasis on robustness and flexibility:
- Building Drupal themes and templates to support a wide range of page types
- Implementing reusable components for campaigns, articles and calls to action
- Supporting content editors with flexible layouts and manageable content structures
- Ensuring cross-browser compatibility and performance (particularly important in 2011)
- Balancing visual ambition with the technical constraints of the platform at the time
Outcome
The redesigned Greenpeace UK website provided a stronger, more engaging platform for campaigns, storytelling and supporter engagement. By successfully adapting the international design and delivering a robust front-end implementation, the project helped Greenpeace UK communicate its message more clearly and respond quickly to evolving campaign needs.
