O’r Pedwar Gwynt is a respected Welsh-language magazine and online publishing platform, known for its essays, criticism, and cultural commentary. When we joined the project, the team needed a clearer, more intuitive user experience—particularly around reading, browsing, and managing memberships.

Building on an existing foundation, we conducted a detailed review of the site’s user journeys, identifying friction points left by the previous implementation. This included issues with navigation, reading experiences, discoverability, and the membership purchase and sign-in flows.

Working closely with the editorial and digital team, we redesigned these core pathways with an emphasis on clarity, simplicity and trust. The focus was on helping users move easily between free and member-only content, understand the value of membership, and complete sign-ups without confusion.

Redesign

Key improvements included:

  • Restructuring navigation to make articles, archives and categories easier to explore
  • Enhancing the reading experience, with clearer typography, spacing and readability patterns
  • Improving content hierarchy on landing and article pages
  • Creating clearer prompts for exploring more writing and discovering membership content

Membership Flow Optimisation

The membership experience was a major part of the project. Work included:

  • Redesigning the membership purchase journey for clarity and reduced friction
  • Improving messaging around benefits and what users receive
  • Clarifying sign-in and account creation paths
  • Designing secure, trustworthy payment steps
  • Ensuring consistency between logged-in, logged-out and member-only states

These changes made the membership process more intuitive and strengthened the platform’s ability to convert interested readers into paying subscribers.

Outcome

The redesigned user flows brought simplicity and consistency to a previously fragmented experience. O’r Pedwar Gwynt now has clearer navigation, improved readability, and a streamlined membership journey that better supports the publication’s editorial mission and long-term sustainability.
